Nachimuthu Socrates is a US citizen who graduated from Columbia University. He is the founder of several Tamil organizations in the US. Socrates has also been a patron of Indian culture organizing several events in the US.

 

Although educated as an engineer, Socrates is a Tamil enthusiast with extensive interest in Tamil literary and classical works.

 

Socrates has also taken up the cause of innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka who have suffered under the tyrannical rule of successive Sri Lankan governments (Several tens of thousands of Tamils have died due to indiscriminate bombing, starvation and lack of even basic medical facilities in North and Eastern part of Sri Lanka).

 

In August 2006 the FBI arrested Socrates - he was indicted on charges of trying to influence the Government/state department officials to remove LTTE from the list of banned organizations.

 

Joshua L. Dratel is the lawyer who is handling Nachimuthu Socrates case. Dratel graduated from Columbia University in 1978, with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
